Chiara.
Simply Chiara. It is the title on this issue’s
cover. This is a special issue, as we want to remember
the founder of the Focolare, who passed away last March
14. Here we outline the life, thought and work of a
woman universally appreciated. To everyone she was,
in fact, simply Chiara. It was not necessary to add
anything else to her name. In times when, submerged
in a complex world, we look for a keyword, the word
Chiara (meaning clear in Italian) best defined her personality,
her vocation, and mission. In these pages, many people
can testify how the encounter with her and her words
have clarified minds and inflamed hearts.

“A
pen does not know what it is going to
write. An artist’s brush does
not know what it is going to paint.
A sculptor’s chisel does not know
what it is about to carve. In the same
way, when God takes a human being into
his hands in order to begin a work of
God in the Church, that person does
not know what he will have to do. He
is an instrument. I think this is my
case.”
With this, Chiara offered the key to
a story that has been told thousands
of times: “It was wartime and
everything was crumbling.” It
all began against the backdrop of the
Second World War, in the heavily bombarded
city of Trent, in northern Italy. Humble
beginnings that were destined to develop
into a Movement that bears the hallmark
of a work of God.
