Recently coming to light are cases of children committing suicide because of abject poverty and hopelessness in their families. If one will read Joey Velasco’s stories about the children in his Hapag- Pagasa painting, one will surely understand this hopelessness deeply affecting our Filipino children. How come this hopelessness nowadays which seems very ironic, since normally children are filled with dreams and fantasies? There are many factors which can explain this phenomenon. One is the poverty and misery in the families causing the children to beg on the streets or even sell their very dignity. Another factor is the mass media which feed our children with information so far removed from their daily lives. Just imagine a child watching a commercial ad of posh cars and houses, with good-looking and beautiful commercials models.
